Ground water or more commonly known as Borewell water is the most common source of water used for household uses in Chennai, India.

How Do you get water From Ground?

Water From Rains, Rivers, Canals are stored in Aquifer. An Aquifer is an underground layer of water bearing in rock fracture or other unconsolidated materials. In simple words an aquifer is a water holding permeable rock or clay. It is essential that we all do rain water harvesting at home to increase our water table and also the quality of water in the ground.

A deep narrow well that is drilled into the ground with a pipe fitted which draws or pumps water from these aquifers are used to get water from the ground. There are two type of bore wells, Shallow bore and deep bore.

Shallow Bore and Deep Bore-

Shallow Bore- A well which is drilled less than 50 feet is considered a shallow bore.

Deep Bore- A Well which is drilled more than 50 Feet are considered deep bore.

Problems with Bore water-

Bore water are naturally contaminated by minerals, chemicals, bacteria and viruses and other natural processes. However, human activity usually has the biggest impact on bore.

  • Installing and pumping water from a well increases the level of oxygen and nutrients in the well. Bacteria thrive in these conditions and may form a biofilm, which captures chemicals, minerals, sands, clays and silts.
  • Excessive or inappropriate use of fertilizers, animal manures, pesticides and insecticides
  • Poorly maintained septic tanks and other liquid waste disposal systems
  • Leaking chemicals from companies
  • Accidental spills of chemicals.
  • Iron can combine with oxygen and make your water yellow in colour.

How to tell if your bore water is contaminated –

Signs of contamination maybe

  • Unusual taste
  • A low pH (acidic water)
  • Rotten egg smell
  • Soap suds/foaming around sprinkler outlets
  • Abnormal colour or sediments
  • Dying or wilting plants
  • Animal’s show a reluctance to drink.
  • Scaling in your appliances, tiles and taps.

Bore water can be treated for normal house hold uses such as bathing, washing vessels and clothes. Water Softners, Iron Removers, Sediment Filters, Activated Carbon filters can be used separately or in combination to make your water suitable for daily use.
